Mentoring highlighted at Ignite Wilmington

We were thrilled to have Head of School Catherine Dolan speaking at Ignite Wilmington #6 on Nov. 30th.  Ignite is a creative information exchange to share ideas, bring people together and have fun.  Speakers have 20 slides advancing every 15 seconds to tell a story.

Catherine shared briefly about the breath and depth of UrbanPromise, then highlighted our new middle school and the mentoring program.

Hear is the end of Catherine’s talk:

Whether a child believes they ‘can’ or they ‘can’t’…either way they are correct. Urban Promise School is dedicated to helping kids see themselves as capable of achieving their potential.

Here’s where you come in. We need mentors. It is my goal to have every child in the school have a mentor.Out of 62 children, currently 23 have mentors. It is all about relationships and it’s a two way street. Both benefit greatly.

On Monday, I had a volunteer in my office who faithfully comes in weekly to do office work. I asked her if she would like to ‘take it up a notch’ and also become a child’s mentor. She said that she would except that she is afraid to fail.

The only failure is not showing up. Success is as simple as being there…fully there, listening intently, being open, and vulnerable…in a word… loving, in a healthy, wholesome life-giving way… and Love never fails!

Join with me to change the face of education in our city, to change the life of a child in our city, to change your life and mine in community. Open your business, your expertise, your mind, your heart and your arms to a child. In the words of Ghandi, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
