This school year, UrbanPromise is welcoming nearly 100 students to UrbanPromise Lower School (Pre-K-7th grades) and UrbanPromise Academy (8th-12th grades). Small classroom sizes, individualized learning plans, school-wide chapel, intentional discipleship, family groups, and daily acts of love from committed teachers distinguish UrbanPromise as a trusted haven for children and parents. Here, transformation takes place, not just academically, but personally and spiritually.
We had the privilege to hear from students and parents about why they love UrbanPromise schools.
Ms. Suzette is grandmother to Abby who attends the lower school:
“Abby was a handful,” she remembered of her earliest days at UPW.
As Ms. Suzette reflects on Abby’s experience of transformation, she lists off teachers’ names, and the ways they’ve impacted her granddaughter:
“Ms. Barnes, she’s been a light.” “Mr. A, he’s a friend, and a teacher.” “Ms. Xavier was right there through my tears. Everybody loves her and she loves everybody!”
Abby’s journey reveals this community coming together to allow Ms. Suzette to say “today, she is so much better.”
Several students from the lower school shared about their experience as well:
“It’s fun!” “I can make new friends.” “The lunches are good.” “If you need a place to be connected to God, UrbanPromise!”
Students at UrbanPromise Academy who dove deep into learning about discipleship and what it means to follow Jesus also shared:
“UrbanPromise actually answers the questions I had about God…” Gavin, a rising Sophomore, shares.
The Academy is a place for curiosities like, “Why are there so many denominations?,” “Does hell have layers?,” and “What does it feel like for our spirit to go to heaven?”
More crucially, for students who say, “I need a role model,” staff are working at all times to show up “outside of the school walls” as Academy english teacher, Mr. Manley, puts it.
“When we build relationships,” Mr. Manley asserts, “God works through it.”
We believe every child deserves access to an excellent education and a loving community that leads to personal and spiritual transformation.Thanks to your faithful generosity, families are paying an average tuition of $30 to $50 per month, with additional scholarships available. UPW covers the rest of the cost, which is $5,000 for each lower school student and $10,000 for each Academy student.
Your investment meets this critical need. Among youth in Wilmington, the average expected ELA proficiency is 17%, and the average expected Math proficiency is 11%. Last year, our lower school showed consistent academic growth, highlighted by the 93rd percentile growth rate of the 3rd Grade class. At the Academy, 73% of students grew above the national average in reading, and 80% of students grew above the national average in math. In addition, 15 students from the Academy committed to a year-long discipleship program outside of school, where they engaged with the Christian faith in deep and meaningful ways. Students eagerly seek to learn and grow, and parents are thrilled to see their children thrive.
