Raising up the next generation of urban Christian leaders

Director's Letter- July 2010

Dear Friend,

Each summer an awesome team of servants come together to transform kids lives in Wilmington at UrbanPromise's free summer camps. Interns from over a dozen states and four countries join more than 30 neighborhood teens (our UrbanPromise StreetLeader staff!) to give nearly 400 kids in Wilmington's most at-risk-neighborhoods the best summer camps ever.

We have, arguably, the best camp programs in Wilmington- structured, high standards, trips, education, and great fun. But what distinguishes our camps is the quality of our staff and their commitment in Christ to the kids and each other.

See for yourself in the four interviews (2 StreetLeaders and 2 Interns) below and scan the interesting bios of the other Interns on the back of the response card.

Malachi
"I love my job as a StreetLeader because I am making an impact. A lot of the kids don't have a dad, and I can be like a role model, like a father to them. Also, my job helps with money for my family."

Name: Malachi
Role: UrbanPromise StreatLeader; Camp Hope
Age: 15, sophmore, Newark High School
Goal: Be a mechanical engineer

This team of StreetLeaders and Interns are working extremely hard in the trenches where it really counts but they can't do it without your help. It will cost us $40,000 to pay our StreetLeaders . These wages are an important component of their job training program and often a vital source of income to their families.

Incredibly, our amazing summer interns serve FOR FREE! They even work hard to raise support. Despite their best efforts we still need about $1000 per intern ($16,000 total) to feed them, provide transportation, food, housing, training, and insurance. Your gift to bridge the gap would be a tremendous way to encourage these inspiring young people . Circle one of the names on the back of the response card and they will send you a thank you note for you to know how much you encouraged them and what they are accomplishing with your help.

Jena Victory
"My first summer at UrbanPromise was life changing. I was so stretched, I had to rely on God and I learned how to call out to him, praying through the day. The kids taught me how to trust and love people. They accepted me for who I am."
Name: Jena Victory; Grand Rapids, MI
Role: Intern (2nd Summer); Camp Hope
Age: 21, Senior, Indiana Wesleyan University, International Studies
Goal: Missions in Africa

Please support their hard and effective work with a generous gift of support. Examine the response card and join the team as a partner. Remember to select a team mate!

Glenesha
"I knew about God before, but I didn't understand he could be real."
"I started learning what a leader was. It's not about money, it's about giving back to the community, helping people who need it. Kids don't know where to turn to and they need you to help show them the way."
Name: Glenesha
Role: UP StreetLeader (Assistant Team Leader, Camp Freedom)
Age: 17, Senior, BHS (GPA before UP, 1.6; after one year in UP, 2.7)
Goal: Be first in family to go to college (youngest of 12 in family), own my own business
